Fly of the Month-Murdich Minnow

 Arizona Scud Blend

Murdich Minnow

This fly has been one of the shop’s smallmouth guides go to patterns for many seasons.  The Murdich is a great searching fly for huge river smallmouth.   Bart starting fishing this pattern about 7 years ago after watching an angler in front of him catch fish after fish on a floating Rapala.  He came into the shop searching for the largest baitfish flies we had.  The Murdich was originally designed as a striper fly but will go down in history as one of the finest mid-river baitfish patterns created.  Since that time this has proven itself on even the most difficult days on the water.  Enjoy.

Thread:  GSP-White

Hook:  TMC 8089 Size 10

Tail: White Bucktail, Silver and Pearl Flashabou

Collar: White Ice Fur

Head: Pearl Estaz

Eyes: 5.0 Prisma (glued on with zap-a-gel)

Top Color: Cool Gray Prisma Color

Fishing Notes:   Fish this fly around wood, mid-river humps and weed beds.  The great thing about this fly is that is suspends and does not get hung up as easily as a clouser or a muppet.  We fish it on RIO 10lb Bass leaders, trimming them back 2 feet and adding 2 feet of 10lb Chameleon Maxima.   The Maxima Chameleon is the perfect color to match our tanin stained rivers.  Give us a shout if you have any questions and good luck.
